Birth Plan or No Birth Plan?
In the wee morning hours this morning, I was standing space with an incredible family, a fierce mama, who welcomed her son earthside. This mama had a life changing, in awe, beautiful birth experience. How did she do that? She birthed in awareness. By knowing and understanding the different options and interventions that could be offered she was present and aware. Things weren't happening to her, she was a part of the process. By no surprise, some unnecessary interventions were offered; but mama and daddy had taken the time to educate themselves and knew where those could lead. They declined. Thank you birthplan.
People ask me regularly what I think of birth plans. Should they really have one? Do they really help? Here is the deal... YES!
Birth plans lay the roadmap to beautiful experiences. Birthplans provide another way for couples to bond, almost forcing us to educate ourselves on the ins and outs of birth; to understand what is offered throughout labor and why; the risks; the benefits. When we are aware, we have a better ability to grasp what is happening. Knowledge is power right? So when things don't go as expected or as hoped, we are able to wrap our minds and emotions around the options and interventions that may have been used to help the birth process. It's not about what boxes get checked off, it's about what happens while making that list. We are less likely to have post partum regrets, "what ifs" and "if onlys". Hiring a doula helps with all of that as well, but that is another blog post.
Birthplans encourage us to learn. As we learn we are able to lean into our faith and how amazing and strong our bodies are. We are able to let go. No fear. Making choices in the natural to align our bodies and relying on the super natural for the rest. We are bringing birth back mamas. We can do this. We are made for this.
